He died for his honour and kept his oath to Lyanna of keeping Jon’s identity a secret to the very last. And the significance of it knighting Brienne “Arise, Brienne of Tarth, a Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” (Photo: HBO)īefore Brienne, we knew Ned as the great bastion of honour in the Seven Kingdoms. It goes on to play a huge part in the episode’s most touching moment… 5. In ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’, both parts of Ice were finally reunited at its ancestral home thanks to Jaime and Brienne being at Winterfell together. Jaime ended up giving his sword to Brienne, to help her fulfil her oath of protecting Sansa, and she named it Oathkeeper, while Jaime took on ownership of Widow’s Wail. The first of those was given to Jaime, and the other to Joffrey, with the young king naming it Widow’s Wail. Remember Ice, Ned Stark’s unreasonably massive Valyrian steel sword from season 1? After Joffrey had Ilyn Payne behead him with it, Tywin Lannister kept it as a trophy, before having it melted down into two, more reasonably sized swords at the start of season 4. This whole episode shows how much respect he has for her. Jaime later reveals he’s travelled this far because he wants to fight the dead alongside Brienne. “This goes beyond loyalty,” he tells Daenerys when she asks why he’s at Winterfell and why he should be trusted. Talk to the Queen,” when trying to persuade him to convince Cersei to join the fight against the Night King. Jaime was visibly stunned in the season 7 finale when Brienne, perhaps the most loyal and noble person left in Westeros, told him: “Oh fuck loyalty, this goes beyond houses and honour and oaths. That would be much more dramatic, right?ĭuring this episode’s tense opening scene, in which Daenerys argues against Jaime joining the army up at Winterfell, we get a seemingly pointed nod to this theory. She believes this to be Tyrion, which partially fuels her hatred of him, but many fans think it may actually refer to Jaime, since he is her younger twin. It stated that Cersei would meet her end by having the life choked from her by her valonqar, which directly translates to “little brother”. If you didn’t already know, the valonqar theory relates to a prophecy told to Cersei when she was a child by a fortune teller called Maggy the Frog. The icy squares representing the Army of the Dead have now progressed further south, past Last Hearth and towards Winterfell.
